After months of speculation, Madonna has announced her separation from her film-maker husband Guy Ritchie.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven and a half years of marriage, their representatives confirmed today," the spokeswoman said in a statement.

"They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time."

The confirmation follows reports in the British press claiming that Ritchie was desperate to separate from the Queen of Pop and that fellow ex-pat Gwyneth Paltrow had spent months trying to convince Madonna not to divorce for the sake of their children.

It is believed that Guy Ritchie will leave the family home in London and relocate to his Wiltshire property in south west England as soon as possible.

As yet, it is not known where the couple's three children - Lourdes (13), Rocco (8), and David Banda (3) will live.
